Stop Going to the Gym of Humble and Modest

There's a moment in every woman's life where she has to make a choice: keep training the muscles of humility and modesty, or start building a different kind of strength entirely.

I've spent 32 years working with women in business, and I can tell you exactly where most of them get stuck. It's not strategy. It's not lack of skill. It's that they've spent a lifetime at the gym of humble and modest, building enormous muscles in staying small — and they haven't built a single muscle in becoming visible.

You're Already an Expert. You Just Won't Admit It.

My business is called Becoming the Expert, and the name trips people up every time. Because here's the truth: most humble, modest, bloody brilliant women will not accept that they're an expert in their own field of excellence.

I'm not asking anyone to claim they're an expert in quantum physics. I'm asking them to claim they're the expert in their field — the one they've already spent years building. That's it. That's the whole ask.

The problem is, most women don't even know what their field of excellence is. They're too close to it. They've normalised their own brilliance into invisibility. So when a woman sits down with me for a discovery session, whether she ever becomes a client or not, my gift to her is clarity. I go rummaging around in her life story, looking for the clues, and I show her what's been there all along.

Your Personal Power Is Not a Personality Flaw

Let's talk about power, because women have a complicated relationship with that word.

Think of yourself as a sun radiating heat. Some people have learned to access a lot of that heat and let it radiate out into the world. That's not arrogance. That's control over your own personal power.

Here's what I want you to understand: you don't need it switched on at full blast, all day, every day. I'm not radiating out anything right now, sitting here quietly. But the second the camera turns on, the second my volume goes up, I can dial in and access it. When I'm on a stage in front of 2,000 people, I turn my power up to about an 8, so it reaches the back wall. When I'm talking to five women in a room, I dial it down to a 2. That's not inconsistency — that's mastery.

Most women never learned this dial exists. Instead, somewhere along the way, they were taught to switch the whole thing off.

I know exactly when it happened for me. I was in primary school, full of energy, and I'd spent an entire day chasing the attention of a boy I liked. By the end of the day, I'd pushed too far — he threw me over his shoulder and broke my leg in three places. I was a ballet dancer. It was devastating.

And in that moment, my young brain drew a very clear conclusion: being too much is physically dangerous. Calm down. Switch off. Stop.

I've spent my adult life turning that switch back on.

If you've ever been told you're "too much," I want you to hear this: that wasn't a character flaw being correctly identified. That was someone else's discomfort with your radiance, and you absorbed it as truth. There is no end to your capacity. There is no end to your potential. There is no end to your personal power. It is an ongoing expansion — so go get it.

Why Women Fail in Business (And It's Not What You Think)

Women don't fail in business because they lack talent. They fail because they're not positioned correctly, packaged correctly, or priced correctly in their field of excellence.

That's the whole job, really: position you as the expert you already are, package you into a brand that reflects it, and price you in a way that doesn't quietly sabotage everything you've built. Because here's the pattern I see over and over — women over-give and under-charge, wrapped in so much humility that they end up running a business that makes no actual money. That's not virtuous. That's a leak.

Inside my Becoming the Expert methodology, I build women into seven streams of income within their personal brand: author, speaker, trainer, coach, mentor, facilitator, and consultant. Seven ways to be paid for the expertise you already carry. (There's a quiet eighth stream too — licensing your own methodology once people start asking to be trained in it — but that's a conversation for a few years down the track, not day one.)

The Job Funds the Dream — Until It Doesn't Need To

I work with two kinds of women.

The first are still in corporate, and I tell them: stay there. Run a dual strategy. Let that job fund the business you're building, because a job with a purpose behind it suddenly feels different. I love working with these women, because they have no idea yet what I'm about to save them — the time, the money, sometimes $75,000 or more in costly trial and error.

The second kind have been trying to build it alone for years, and they land in my world saying, "I wish I'd met you five years ago. Sixteen years ago." And what I tell them is this: that wasn't your journey. The universe didn't want that for you then. It's put me in front of you now, which means now is exactly the right time. I take that as a great honour — to be someone's guide for this particular season of their becoming.

90 Days to Build It. A Lifetime to Own It.

People are always stunned that I build a complete, boxed business — book, keynote, signature program, website, social presence — in 90 days. If you've been in business a while, you know exactly how big a deal that is.

Here's how it works: for the first stretch, I build while my clients sleep. I tell them it's a bit like the elves and the shoemaker — they go to bed, and in the morning, the shoes are made. They get to lean back and let me drive the train.

Then something shifts. I start handing the wheel back to them, and that's when the real work begins — because I know exactly what's going to trigger them, and when. Pricing a signature program at $10,000 or $20,000 when you've never sold one before? That will bring something up. Every time. And I'm ready for it, because building a business is the single greatest personal development program you will ever put yourself through. It will trigger you on every level there is.

I only ask one thing of my clients: when it comes up, tell me. Text me. "Oh my God, we need to talk." I am right there, ready for the conversation — big or small — because if you don't tell me, I can't help you navigate it.

This is why I call myself a mentor rather than a coach. A coach asks you questions so you can find your own answers. I don't do that — because half the time, you don't know what you don't know yet. A mentor tells you. I've done this. I continue to do this. I bring my own scar tissue and my own wins into the room with you.

The Invitation

If any part of this is landing for you — if you've spent years in the gym of humble and modest and you're ready to build a different kind of muscle — that's not a coincidence. That's the moment you're in.

You don't need an agenda to reach out. You don't need to apologise for taking up space, or worry about wasting anyone's time. Just come as you are, and let's find the field of excellence that's already yours.
